Some drivers seek out a new vehicle that can inject a little excitement into their daily routine. Others see their SUVs as more of a passport to adventure that, thanks to a little off-road ability, AWD, and a good set of all-terrain tires, can allow drivers to access their favorite hiking trail or fishing spot and make their own fun. Both options have their advantages, but why saddle yourself with any hard decisions when you can just buy a Subaru?
Known for its compelling combination of everyday driveability and off-road prowess, Subaru has carved out a strong following amongst adventure-seeking drivers. Buyers have plenty of options when it comes to browsing new SUVs for sale, but Subaru’s 2026 lineup is pretty difficult to beat.
For 2026, the Crosstrek gains a hybrid powertrain, and the Forester adds a bit of off-road attitude, while Subaru triples its EV offerings with the arrival of the Uncharted and the Trailseeker. There’s also plenty of news to discuss when it comes to the brand’s original EV, the Solterra, and the three-row Ascent, so let's dive in and take a quick trip through the 2026 roster.
Crosstrek
- Class: Subcompact SUV
- Powertrain: Gas or Hybrid
- An eco-friendly commuter that’s not afraid of adventure.
The Crosstrek might represent Subaru’s smallest SUV offering, but the subcompact packs a big punch with a new optional hybrid powertrain that sees the crossover achieve an estimated 36 MPG combined. In addition to the new hybrid, the subcompact ups its performance for the 2026 model year, swapping out its old 152 hp 2.0L base engine for a previously optional 194 hp 2.5L design.
Opting for the gas-powered version yields a still respectable 29 MPG combined and increases the towing capacity to 3,500 lbs with the rugged Wilderness trim. That’s a 2,000 lb improvement over the hybrid, and it easily makes the Crosstrek the segment’s undisputed leader when it comes to towing.
Subaru has long been known for its off-road-ready models, and the Crosstrek is no exception. While it falls on the smaller end of the SUV spectrum, the aforementioned Wilderness trim sees the Crosstrek gain some legitimate off-road credentials with 9.3 inches of ground clearance, all-terrain tires, protective cladding, and more.
Uncharted
- Class: Subcompact SUV
- Powertrain: Electric
- A surprising speedster joins the lineup
New for 2026, the Subaru Uncharted represents another fruitful collaboration between two storied Japanese brands. The Subaru Solterra has a cousin in the Toyota bZ, and the Subaru BRZ sports car counts the Toyota GR86 as a close relative. Now the family grows to three with the Subaru Uncharted and the Toyota C-HR.
This subcompact EV is the second all-electric model to emerge from Subaru, and proves that the automaker is all-in on the EV wave. While it might be a Subaru, it is worth noting that the Uncharted does lack one of the brand’s hallmark features: standard AWD. Toyota’s new C-HR lacks the Uncharted's standard FWD option, which makes the Subaru a more enticing and affordable option for those who rarely venture into off-road environs.
Despite its name, the Uncharted follows a familiar all-electric roadmap, with the base powertrain combining a single electric motor and a 74.7 kWh battery to deliver 221 hp and around 300 miles of driving range. In order to enjoy all-wheel drive, drivers will have to opt for the optional dual-motor setup, but that’s not exactly a tough sell. The AWD version churns out 338 hp and can accelerate up to 60 mph in under five seconds.
Forester
- Class: Compact SUV
- Powertrain: Gas or Hybrid
- The legend returns with a fresh Wilderness trim for 2026
The Forester sees some important updates for 2026, including a new center console that enhances the SUV’s ergonomics with improved storage and a relocated shifter. However, the real highlight would have to be the new-and-improved Wilderness trim. The off-road-ready model sees Subaru double down on its adventurous attitude with improved ground clearance, all-terrain tires, a heavy-duty transmission cooler, and a revised final drive ratio designed to improve off-road performance.
The Forester even alters its dimensions to improve your chances of achieving success on the road less traveled, with Subaru adding a few degrees to the crossover’s approach, departure, and breakover angles. Copper-finish exterior accents mark the model as a true off-road contender, while water-resistant upholstery with copper stitching improves the Forester in terms of both form and function.
The Wilderness can also tow more than your average compact SUV, with 3,500 lbs of max trailering capacity when selecting the gas-powered engine, but the hybrid is tough to beat in terms of pure efficiency. Introduced last year, the Forester Hybrid logs 35 MPG combined and outpaces the purely gas-powered model with an additional 14 hp.
Solterra
- Class: Compact SUV
- Powertrain: Electric
- Big improvements in power, range, and charging
Subaru’s first all-electric SUV has certainly improved since it made its debut back in 2023. The compact EV boasted plenty of cutting-edge tech when it originally hit the market, and it’s not slowing down anytime soon. The 2024 model added a new steering wheel with integrated paddles that let drivers easily adjust the crossover’s regenerative braking system, as well as a new low-speed hands-free driving mode, an intersection collision detection system, and an automatic lane-changing feature.
However, 2026 marks a banner year for the Solterra’s performance resume. A larger battery and more efficient engineering see the EV increase its range by over 25 percent for a total of 288 miles, and powertrain output follows suit with the 2026 model offering 233 hp to the 2025 version’s 215 hp. For those in the market for maximum power, there’s the new Solterra XT. Its enhanced dual-motor setup produces 338 hp and makes it the quickest Subaru on record, with a zero to 60 mph time of 4.3 seconds; a full second faster than the brand’s dedicated sports cars, the WRX and BRZ.
Outback
- Class: Midsize SUV
- Powertrain: Gas
- Subaru’s oldest SUV gains more cargo space
The Outback is the elder statement of the Subaru lineup, and it’s all the better for it. This SUV has been providing drivers with an adventure-ready option since its introduction as the Legacy Outback in 1995, and it has steadily evolved into one of the market’s most enticing SUV models. For 2026, the Outback has been fully redesigned to offer a higher roofline for more passenger and cargo space.
As one of Saubru’s larger SUV options, it's the Outback's upgraded cargo capacity that really sets it apart. The Outback was already one of the roomier models in the midsize segment with 75.6 cu.ft. of cargo space for 2025, but the new redesign increases that to 80.5 cu.ft. Throw in some equally generous seating with 43 inches of front-row legroom, and it’s not tough to see why the Outback has become a popular pick amongst busy families and outdoorsy drivers who need plenty of room for their adventure gear.
Trailseeker
- Class: Midsize SUV
- Powertrain: Electric
- A new EV offers a compelling combination of performance and efficiency
Those looking for an eco-friendly way to tackle their local off-road trails have an exciting new option in the Subaru Trailseeker. A standard dual-motor setup and a 74.7 kWh battery set the SUV up for success, with performance that really makes the new Trailseeker tough to ignore. Don’t get us wrong: the EV’s roughly 260-mile range isn’t bad, but if there’s one number that really caught our attention, it would be the crossover’s 375 hp output. That sort of muscle allows the Trailseeker to sprint to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, which is a marked improvement over much of the midsize segment.
Every Subaru SUV offers some level of off-road ability. Still, the Trailseeker lives up to its ambitious name with a full complement of dedicated gear and 8.5 inches of ground clearance. Subaru’s X-MODE system leverages the latest tech to max out the Trailseeker’s off-road traction, adjusting the all-wheel drive, throttle, and braking to provide plenty of traction when the going gets rough. Throw in the ability to pull 3,500 lbs, clever safety features, and Subaru’s largest-ever infotainment touchscreen at 14 inches, and it’s easy to see what the Trailseeker brings to the table.
Ascent
- Class: Three-Row SUV
- Powertrain: Gas
- Impressive ADAS arsenal meets three-row comfort and towing power
Subaru’s largest model checks all of the boxes when it comes to those qualities that buyers value most. Comfortable seating for up to eight passengers? Check. A potent powertrain worthy of the SUV’s three-row design? Check. Standard AWD? Of course—it is a Subaru, after all. The brand has pulled out all of the stops to provide buyers with a well-rounded three-row SUV that lacks any obvious weak points.
Just take the 2026 Ascent’s EyeSight suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), for example. While features like adaptive cruise control, adaptive headlights, and trailer sway damping are often treated as pricey add-ons, Subaru’s EyeSight package allows drivers to enjoy the latest in automotive safety without breaking the bank. This value-focused approach isn’t limited to the Ascent’s safety arsenal.
The 2025 model saw Subaru make some major upgrades to the base Premium trim, which, as the name implies, is a little fancier than your average entry-level model. The 2026 Ascent Premium comes with StarTex upholstery, tri-zone climate control, heated front seats, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. The Ascent is also ready to put in a little hard work, with a 2.4L turbocharged engine that allows the crossover to tow up to 5,000 lbs.
